| Background
This Recruitment Agency was based in two
locations in the West Midlands. Both offices
had individual desktop PC's that were not
networked - one PC accessed the internet
through dial-up and one PC had a printer
connected to it. Some of the PC's were over
five years old and therefore had poor performances
and a lot of the software was outdated.
Staff had their own individual email accounts
they used for work (Hotmail, Yahoo, etc)
and documents that needed printing had to
be copied to floppy disk. The Recruitment
Agency approached NS-IT to give them a solution
that would allow both offices to access
the internet, have a corporate email identity
and be able to share resources between each
office.
Solution
NS-IT installed suitable cabling and data
ports in the two buildings which connected
to a patch panel. A single server was then
installed at each office with Windows 2000
Server Operating System. Where needed old
PC's were replaced with new ones, and in
other cases existing PC's were upgraded.
An identical Operating System (Windows XP
Professional) was installed on all PC's
as well as Office XP. NS-IT then created
a Local Area Network at each location. NS-IT
then approached Netsecrets to provide a
domain name which would provide 20 mailboxes
as well as sourcing a suitable Internet
Service Provider. Both offices were connected
to the Internet through an ADSL connection
- all PC's accessing the internet through
the server. NS-IT also set up a Virtual
Private Network (VPN) so both offices could
access resources at each location through
the internet. NS-IT configured each user's
email client software (Microsoft Outlook)
to access their mailboxes on the mail server
hosted by Netsecrets.
